Uelzen

Uelzen is a 34,000-person town on the Hanover–Hamburg main line, best known for the Hundertwasserbahnhof — a station rebuilt in 2000 in the artist's colours, and free to walk through. The old town has brick Gothic and timber-framed houses, and the Hösseringen open-air museum sits in the heath to the south. Most travellers see it as a rail stop between Hamburg and Hanover, or a half-day from Lüneburg.

Get around
The centre is walkable: station to Altes Rathaus is about 10 minutes on foot. Buses cover the suburbs and Suderburg/Hösseringen but run thinly on Sundays. Uelzen is on the Hanover–Hamburg main line, with regional trains to Soltau, Brunswick and Magdeburg.
