Uckfield
Skip Uckfield as a base: half a day covers the town. Sleep in Lewes or Brighton and use it as a rail stop for the Lavender Line and Sheffield Park.
Uckfield is a small Weald market town of about 15,000 people, 1 h 30 min by train from London Bridge and the end of the line — the railway does not continue to Lewes. The town itself is a morning: a 1436 thatched cottage, a three-screen cinema on the High Street and free parking everywhere. The reason to come is the countryside around it — Sheffield Park Garden, the Bluebell Railway and the Lavender Line — and that needs a car or a bus, not a base.

Get around
Walk the town centre — it is small and parking is free throughout. For anything outside, you need a car or a bus: the town bus mostly loops housing estates and is of little use to visitors. Bus 29/28 runs Brighton and Lewes to Tunbridge Wells through Uckfield; bus 54 links Eastbourne and Hailsham with Uckfield and East Grinstead; bus 31 runs from Haywards Heath. Trains run from London Bridge via East Croydon and Oxted, and the line ends at Uckfield — it does not continue to Lewes.

- The Lavender Line at Isfield is served by bus 29, not 29A.
- Several town-centre venues change hands or close: check opening days before you travel.
- Rural lanes around the Weald have no pavement and no lighting: do not walk between villages after dark.
Uckfield is a low-crime small town and feels safe in daylight. The real risks are rural: unlit lanes with no pavement, and Friday and Saturday nights around the High Street pubs.
