Tynemouth is a coastal town at the mouth of the Tyne, nine miles east of Newcastle upon Tyne, built around a medieval priory and castle on the headland. It has sandy beaches, a weekend market in the old station, and a compact Front Street of shops, pubs and restaurants. Most visitors come for a day from Newcastle on the Metro Yellow Line, or stay one or two nights to combine the coast with the city.

Get around
The Tyne and Wear Metro Yellow Line serves Tynemouth, North Shields and Cullercoats; from Newcastle city centre it takes about 25 min. Buses 306 and 1 also run from Newcastle and Gateshead. Within the town everything is walkable: station to Front Street 2 min, Front Street to the priory about 10 min, and the coast path links North Shields, Tynemouth and Cullercoats.
