Give Tykocin one full day from Białystok (30 min by bus or car); sleep over only if you want the Narew valley and castle at dusk.
Tykocin is a small Podlaskie town on the Narew with a preserved Baroque square, a reconstructed royal castle and one of Poland's best surviving Baroque synagogues. It is compact enough to walk in half a day, but the Jewish quarter, the castle and the river boulevard together fill a full day. Most travellers visit from Białystok; a night here buys quiet evenings and easy cycling into the Narew valley.

Tykocin is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are unlit rural roads and paths after dark if you cycle, and summer ticks in the Narew valley: use lights, and check yourself after walking in tall grass.
