Tychy
Skip as a base: Tychy is a 20–25 min train hop from Katowice. Come for half a day for the Tyskie brewery, or sleep here only if Katowice beds are full.
Tychy is a 125,000-person city in the Katowice metropolis, 20 km south of Katowice and best known as the home of Tyskie beer. It grew as a socialist New Town from the 1950s, so the centre is modern and low on old-town atmosphere. The brewery museum, a water park and a spa pyramid are the main draws; most travellers see it as a half-day from Katowice rather than a destination.

Local trains run every 30 min from Katowice (20–25 min) and stop at five halts across Tychy, so rail often beats the bus. ZTM Metropolia buses and trolleybuses cover the city on one unified ticket; Katowice trams do not reach this far. Buy tickets from machines or the driver.

- Promnice Castle restaurant has been closed in recent seasons: check before you walk out to the lake.
Tychy is a calm, ordinary Polish city and feels safe day and night. The real risks are winter ice on pavements, unlit paths around the lake after dark, and the walk from the main station into the centre, which is dull rather than dangerous.
