Twizel
Base here 1–2 nights as the gateway to Aoraki/Mount Cook: 1 h to the national park, cheaper beds than Tekapo, and SH8 on your route.
Twizel is Mackenzie Country's largest town, a hydro-scheme settlement turned tourism base about 60 km southwest of Lake Tekapo and 30 km north of Omarama on State Highway 8. It is the closest decent-sized town to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, roughly an hour's drive north, and it sits beside glacial lakes and reservoirs — Ruataniwha and Benmore — used for rowing and water sports. Most travellers use it as a bed for Mount Cook, a stop on the Queenstown–Christchurch bus route, or a night on the road between Tekapo and Omarama. The town itself is small: a main street, a handful of places to eat, and a river trail. One night covers the town; two nights let you do Mount Cook properly without moving hotels.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- No scheduled flights: Pukaki Airport (TWZ) is charter-only, so plan on driving from Christchurch or Queenstown.
- The Mount Cook road can close in winter snow and ice; check conditions before setting out.
- Fuel and food options are limited — fill up and buy supplies in Tekapo, Omarama or Twizel itself.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the highway and in the national park; download offline maps.
- Distances look short on the map but alpine roads are slow; do not over-plan the day.
Twizel is a small, low-crime town and generally safe for tourists. The real risks are driving: alpine roads, ice in winter, tiredness after long days, and patchy phone coverage. Tell someone your route and carry water and warm layers.
