Tumon

Tumon is a morning-and-evening beach town: swim and snorkel before 10:00, rest indoors at midday, see the cliff at sunset — and hire a car for one day for the south.

Guam has one hotel strip and it is Tumon Bay, a curved beach about three kilometres long with the reef close in. Most visitors stay in one hotel for the whole trip, so the choices are which end of the bay, which morning for the snorkel, and which day for the car. The capital, Hagåtña, and the south are a drive away, not a walk.

Get around

Walk the strip inside a cluster by day; a taxi or hotel shuttle between clusters and after dark.

Passes
No pass. Taxis are metered or agreed in advance and are not cheap; a hire car pays for itself on the south day.
Late at night
No rail. Buses are infrequent and mostly do not serve the strip late: ask the hotel to book the ride back.

Quieter north end with reef snorkelling at the door; a short car ride from the central plazas.

First-timers: beach, plazas and restaurants are a short walk; choose a hotel with a 24-hour desk and a car door.

Language

English is universal. CHamoru is the island's own language, being revived in schools and on signs; a few words are warmly received. In Tumon, many shop and hotel staff also speak Japanese, Korean or a Filipino language.

  • Place names mix CHamoru and Spanish spellings: Hagåtña, Humåtak (Umatac), Inalåhan (Inarajan).

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Håfa adai with a smile; handshakes; avoid: Being in a hurry with elders
  • Elders: Many young islanders greet elders with nginge' (sniffing the back of their hand); watch, do not copy unless invited; avoid: Interrupting elders
  • Fiestas: Eat, thank the host, take the plate you are offered; avoid: Leaving right after eating
  • Church: Covered shoulders and knees; avoid: Photographing Mass
  • Land and sea: Ask before crossing land or collecting anything; avoid: Taking shells, coral or stones from preserves and latte sites

Red lines

  • Do not climb on latte stones or war memorials.
  • Do not feed or chase wildlife.
  • Cover up away from the beach and hotel.

Scams (Guam page)

  • Fake ESTA and G-CNMI ETA sites: Apply only on esta.cbp.dhs.gov or g-cnmi-eta.cbp.dhs.gov; agents charge up to ten times the official fee.
  • Timeshare and 'free tour' offers: A free breakfast or cheap tour that ends in a long sales pitch; say no politely.
  • Car break-ins: Leave nothing visible, not even a bag in the boot you just loaded in the car park.
  • Rental damage claims: Film the car at pick-up, including the tyres and windscreen.
  • Massage and bar bills: Agree prices first; avoid places touting from the pavement.
