Tumby Bay
Stop one night on the Eyre Peninsula drive, or skip it: the beach, jetty and pub fill an afternoon, not a day.
Tumby Bay is a small coastal town about an hour's drive north of Port Lincoln, with a sandy beach, a jetty you can swim from, a mangrove boardwalk and two pubs facing the water. There is no public transport in town and no scheduled bus or train in, so it only works if you are driving the Eyre Peninsula. Most travellers use it as a single overnight between Port Lincoln and Whyalla or Cowell, or as a lunch and swim stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport in town and no scheduled bus or train in: a car is required.
- Fuel and grocery options are limited; the Foodland is small and closes in the evening.
- Beach and jetty swimming is unpatrolled; check for bluebottles and strong wind.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the highway north of town.
- Summer fire danger on the Eyre Peninsula can close roads: check the CFS warnings before driving.
A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are the drive (long, straight, kangaroos at dusk), unpatrolled water, and summer heat and fire danger: carry water and check warnings before heading north.
