Tumbarumba
Give Tumbarumba one night, not three: rail trail, town museum and a bakery stop. Come in late February for Tumbafest, or skip it if you want big-town services.
Tumbarumba is a small timber town of about 1,900 people at the western edge of the Snowy Mountains, 60 km south of Tumut and 58 km off the Hume Highway. There is one main street, a 21 km rail trail, a town museum and a festival in late February. It works as a quiet one-night stop between Tumut and Khancoban, not as a base for the Snowy Mountains.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the rail trailhead, the Pioneer Womens Hut Museum and the roads to Tumut, Khancoban and Holbrook all need one. The town centre itself is walkable in 10 minutes. Coaches from Cootamundra or Wagga Wagga stop in town but do not serve the surrounding sights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Batlow–Tumbarumba road can carry snow and ice in winter: check conditions before driving.
- Fuel and food options are limited; fill up in Tumut or Khancoban.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads towards Khancoban.
A quiet country town with no real street-crime problem. The genuine risks are wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk, winter ice on the Batlow road, and long gaps between fuel stops.
