Tucumcari
Stop for one night on I-40, not a base: see the Route 66 neon and two small museums in 3–4 hours, then drive on.
Tucumcari is a Route 66 town of about 5,000 people on Interstate 40 in northeast New Mexico, the first place of any size when you drive west out of Texas. Its draw is the strip of 1950s motel neon along Tucumcari Boulevard, plus a dinosaur museum and a county historical museum. Almost everyone arrives by car and stays one night between Amarillo and Albuquerque.

Get around
You need a car. The town spreads along Tucumcari Boulevard (old Route 66) and the I-40 frontage, with four exits; nothing is more than a 10-minute drive. There is no useful local bus service.
