Tübingen is a small university town on the Neckar, about 30 km southwest of Stuttgart, with a preserved medieval centre, 25,000 students and a river you can punt. It is a half-day-to-one-day stop, not a base for a week: sights are compact, the old town is hilly and walkable, and the town empties in the semester breaks.
