Tsuyama
津山市
One night is enough: Kakuzan Park's castle walls and Joto Street in a half day, cherry blossoms in early April, hydrangeas in mid-June.
Tsuyama is a former castle town in northern Okayama, about an hour by train from Okayama Station. Its draw is compact: the stone walls of Tsuyama Castle in Kakuzan Park, the preserved Edo-era houses of Joto Street, and a handful of small museums. It is a quiet stop, not a destination in itself, and most travellers see it in a day or sleep one night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Many sights are a bus or bike ride apart; do not assume everything is walkable.
- Some museums close on Mondays or Tuesdays: check each one before you go.
- Rural trains on the Inbi and Kishin lines are infrequent; plan around the timetable, not the other way round.
- Small shops and museums may take cash only.
A quiet, low-crime country town. The real risks are infrequent rural trains, closed museums on their rest days, and summer heat; carry cash for small shops.
