Stay one night, not two: walk Tonomachi and the carp canals in an afternoon, ride the chair lift to the castle ruins, then leave on the morning train.
Tsuwano is a small castle town in Shimane, close to the Yamaguchi border, with a single sightseeing street, canals full of carp and a hilltop castle ruin. It is walkable end to end in a few hours, so one night covers it; a day trip from Masuda or Yamaguchi works if you accept the train timetable. Most restaurants close early, so eat before 18:00 unless your inn includes dinner.

Get around
Walk. Tonomachi, the station, the temples and the shrine are all within about 20 minutes on foot. Bicycles can be rented across from the station, and taxis usually wait at the station forecourt. The castle chair lift and Hori Gardens need a lift, bus or taxi.

- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- Most restaurants serve lunch and close early; if your inn has no dinner, eat before 18:00 or you may go hungry.
- The castle chair lift runs Mar–Nov daily and Dec–Feb weekends only: check before you climb.
- Trains on the Yamaguchi line are few — about six each way a day — so fix your departure before you plan the day.
- Cash is still needed in small shops and some restaurants; carry yen.
Very safe for a town of this size; the real risks are the early restaurant closing times, few trains, uneven paths up to the shrine and castle, and summer heat.
