Tsuchiura
土浦
Half a day: walk the castle ruins and the lakefront, then move on. One night only if you are cycling around Lake Kasumigaura.
Tsuchiura is a quiet JR Joban Line stop in southern Ibaraki, on the shore of Lake Kasumigaura (Japan's second-largest lake). The city has a small castle ruin, a few old merchant streets and a lakeside park. Most travellers use it as a lunch break between Tokyo and Mito or as a base for cycling the lake loop. It is not a destination on its own.
