Tryavna
Трявна
Give Tryavna one night, two if you hike: the old square, icon museum and wood-carving lanes fill a half-day, and it pairs with Gabrovo and Etara.
Tryavna is a small Balkan Mountains town of about 12,000 people with over a hundred listed 19th-century buildings and a working wood-carving and icon-painting tradition. The old quarter is compact and walkable in an afternoon; the reason to stay longer is the surrounding Central Balkan National Park and the craft villages near Gabrovo.

Scams and watch-outs
- Some museums close in winter or keep short hours: check before you travel.
- The daily Sofia bus runs once a day; miss it and you reroute via Gabrovo or Gorna Oryahovitsa.
- Trains are slow and the station is outside the centre; buses are usually faster for short hops.
- Mountain weather changes fast above Uzana; carry a layer even in summer.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are icy pavements in winter, unlit lanes after dark and mountain weather above Uzana.
