Truth or Consequences — locally T or C, once named Hot Springs — is a small Rio Grande town of about 7,300 people whose downtown bathhouse district still runs on geothermal mineral water. Most visitors come for a soak, a slow afternoon of galleries and a night or two, not for a full sightseeing itinerary. It sits on I-25 roughly halfway between Albuquerque and Las Cruces, so it works as a one- or two-night break on a Southwest New Mexico drive.

Get around
There is no public transit. Downtown is compact and walkable — the bathhouses, galleries and several restaurants sit within a few blocks. A car is needed for Elephant Butte Lake, Caballo Lake and Spaceport America; taxis cover town and the run to Elephant Butte. Rental cars are limited, so book ahead if you want one for a day.
