Troodos Square
Troodos Square is a high-altitude base for hiking and winter sports, not a destination in itself: one night is enough if you have a car, or a day-trip from Limassol or Nicosia.
Troodos Square is a small cluster of shops and lodges at 1,707 m on the main Troodos road. It serves as a hub for the island's best mountain walks, a handful of painted churches, and Cyprus's only ski area. Most travellers use it as a base for two or three nights in the Troodos region, staying in one of the nearby villages like Platres or Agros, and passing through the square for supplies or a meal.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and a smile; friends and family kiss on both cheeks; avoid: Being brisk — small talk first, business second
- Hospitality: Accept a coffee or a sweet when offered in a village; it is part of the visit; avoid: Refusing everything; one small taste is enough
- The Cyprus issue: Listen if people bring it up; many have family stories from 1974; avoid: Offering opinions on who is to blame
- Churches: Light a candle if you wish (small donation), keep voices low; avoid: Shorts, bare shoulders and flash photography
- Dress in town: Casual but covered; shirts on away from the beach; avoid: Swimwear in shops, villages and churches
- Time: Relax: meals and meetings run slower than in northern Europe; avoid: Rushing a waiter for the bill — ask for it when ready
- Naming: Use the English or local name of the side you are on; avoid: Using Greek names in the north or Turkish names in the south in a pointed way
Scams and watch-outs
- In winter, a 4x4 or snow chains are required when snow is heavy; check road conditions before driving.
- The square itself is small: don't expect a town. Most services are in the surrounding villages.
- Ski facilities are basic and only operate when there is enough snow; check conditions in advance.
- Bus services are infrequent; plan your trip around the limited timetable.
Troodos Square is safe. The main risks are winter driving conditions and slippery trails after rain. Carry water and sun protection in summer; in winter, check road conditions and carry chains.
