Voykit pocket guide · United States
Trinidad, Colorado
Give Trinidad one night, two at most: a walkable Old West main street, a lake park and the Highway of Legends coal camps. Skip it as a base.
Trinidad sits on Interstate 25 about 30 minutes north of the New Mexico line, on the old Santa Fe Trail and a coal-and-cattle past. The historic core is small and walkable in an afternoon; the real draw is the Scenic Highway of Legends west into the Sangre de Cristo foothills. Most travellers use it as a break on the Denver–Santa Fe drive, or as an Amtrak stop on the Southwest Chief.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons bring fast thunderstorms and hail in the foothills; start drives early.
- Highway 12 over Cucharas Pass is a mountain road with steep grades and few services — check conditions in winter.
- Cell coverage is patchy west of town on the Highway of Legends.
- Distances are long: the next town with full services is Raton, about 30 min south, or Walsenburg, about 40 min north.
Trinidad is a small town and generally calm for visitors; the real risks are mountain weather on Highway 12, long empty drives and icy winter roads. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
