Tring
Use Tring as a half-day stop for the free Natural History Museum, or one night if you want Ashridge and Ivinghoe Beacon on foot.
Tring is a 12,000-person market town in a gap through the Chiltern Hills, 30 miles (50 km) from central London and inside the commuter belt. Its draw is small and specific: a free Natural History Museum built from one Victorian collection, plus chalk downland, beech woods and canal towpath on the doorstep. The town itself is practical rather than touristic, and the railway station sits 1.8 miles from the centre, so plan the walk or a taxi.

Get around
The town centre is walkable. For Ashridge, Ivinghoe Beacon, Pitstone Windmill and the canal you need a car, a bike or a long walk: local roads are narrow, hedged and unlit at night. The Chilterns Cycleway and the Grand Union Canal towpath pass nearby; the towpath is flat but shared with pedestrians and has no barrier above the water.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Tring station is 1.8 miles from the centre: the walk takes about 40 minutes, so allow for it or book a taxi.
- Country lanes have limited visibility at blind corners and few streetlights: lights and high-visibility clothing are essential after dark.
- Cows graze in the fields around Tring Park Woods: keep dogs under control.
- The museum is closed on Mondays; free entry, but check the official page before a special trip.
A low-crime commuter town; the real risks are unlit, narrow country lanes after dark, uneven chalk paths on the Ridgeway-style walks, and cold, wet weather on the hills with no shelter.
