Trieste
Give Trieste 2 nights: one for Piazza Unità and the old town, one for Miramare and San Giusto. Skip it if you want beach weather or a classic Italian postcard.
Trieste is Italy's border city, a Habsburg port where the coffee houses, the Austrian-quarter squares and the Slovenian buses across the border matter more than a checklist of sights. It is compact and walkable, cheaper than Venice, and works as a 2-night stop between Venice and Ljubljana or as a base for Miramare and the Carso.

Get around
Walk the centre: Piazza Unità to the station is about 15 min on foot and most sights sit inside that ring. Buses cover Barcola, Miramare and the Carso; buy paper tickets at tobacconists or tap a contactless bank card on board. The Opicina tram has been suspended since October 2025 — check before planning on it.

- Central, walkable to Piazza Unità and the station; best for a first 2-night stay.
- Piazza Unità d'Italia and the old town
- Sea-front hotels and cafés on the doorstep; pricier, and the bora wind hits hardest here.
- Near Trieste Centrale station
- Cheapest beds and easiest bags-on-arrival; 15 min walk to the square, less evening atmosphere.
- Barcola and Miramare
- Seafront and castle-side stays; quieter, needs a bus or a long walk into the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- The bora wind can close the waterfront promenade and knock you off balance; hold handrails on San Giusto.
- Validate paper bus tickets on board — inspectors work lines 1, 9, 10, 20 and 21 year-round and the fine is €70.
- The Opicina tram is out of service (suspended October 2025); do not build a day around it.
- Grotta Gigante needs a booked tour slot in advance; no reservation, no entry.
- Bars and cafés on Piazza Unità charge more for the same coffee than one street back.
Trieste is a low-crime city; the real risks are the bora wind on the waterfront, unvalidated bus tickets and the steep, slippery steps up to San Giusto after rain.
