Treviso
Give Treviso one night, or a half-day from Venice: the walled centre is small, walkable and cheaper than Venice, 30 min by train.
Treviso is a flat, walled Veneto city of about 83,000 people, 30 km north of Venice and half an hour away by train. The historic centre is small enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, crossed by the Sile river and its canals, with frescoed churches, a fish-market island and the tiramisu claim. It works as a cheaper, quieter base for Venice, or as a stop on the Venice–Udine line.

Get around
Walk: the centre is small and flat, 20 min end to end. Local buses cover the outer city but thin out at night; fares are low within the comune and a little more outside. Bikes are the local way to follow the Restera path along the Sile. Driving in is a bad idea: one-way streets and a ring road around the walls.
