Tredegar
One night, and only as a cheap bed for the Brecon Beacons or Blaenavon: the town itself is a 2-hour walk, not a day.
Tredegar is a small former iron and coal town in the Sirhowy Valley, on the southern edge of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Its two sights, the cast-iron Town Clock and Bedwellty House and Park, sit within a few minutes of each other in the centre. Almost everyone who sleeps here does so to walk or ride in the national park, or to see the Blaenavon industrial landscape. Come for a night, not a holiday.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses to the park and to Blaenavon are infrequent, and some stop early: check the day's last departure before you set out.
- Upland weather changes fast; carry a waterproof and a charged phone, as signal is patchy on the moors.
- Some town pubs are cash-friendly and quiet midweek: check opening before you walk over.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are upland weather, poor phone signal on the moors and thin evening bus services. Walk with a map and a light, and don't rely on a late bus back.
