Traverse City sits on Grand Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, about 15,000 residents and the self-styled cherry capital. The town itself is a compact downtown of Front Street shops and waterfront; the reason to come is what surrounds it — Sleeping Bear Dunes, two wine peninsulas, and Lake Michigan beaches. A car changes the trip completely: with one you get dunes and vineyards, without one you get a walkable downtown and a bus that stops on Sundays.
