Traralgon
Give Traralgon one night as a Latrobe Valley stop between Melbourne and the Gippsland lakes, or skip it if you are driving straight through to Sale.
Traralgon is the largest town in the Latrobe Valley, about 2 h 15 min by V/Line train from Melbourne and just off the Princes Freeway. It is a service town with a compact centre, a rail trail and a reservoir reserve, not a destination in itself. Most travellers use it as a bed for the night on the way to Central Gippsland, the Strzelecki Ranges or the Ninety Mile Beach.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains to Melbourne are infrequent outside peak; check the V/Line timetable before you plan a day trip.
- Summer can bring total fire ban days in the Latrobe Valley: check the CFA and VicEmergency warnings before any bush walk.
- Some pubs and late venues have a rough reputation; keep to the main streets after dark.
Traralgon is a quiet country town by day; the real risks are summer bushfire days, unlit roads at night and late-night pubs on the main street. Keep to the centre after dark and check fire warnings in summer.
