Give Tralee one night as a real-town base for Kerry: museum and wetlands in the morning, Dingle Way or Banna Strand in the afternoon.
Tralee is County Kerry's county town, about 26,000 people, north of the Ring of Kerry circuit. It has a compact Georgian centre, a good county museum, a wetland reserve and the start of the Dingle Way, but its outlying sights (Ardfert, Banna Strand, Fenit, Kerry Head) need a car. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper base than Killarney, or as a stop between Limerick and the Dingle peninsula.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For Ardfert, Banna Strand, Fenit and Kerry Head you need a car or a taxi; buses cover Killarney, Dingle, Limerick and Listowel but not the coastal villages well. Tralee Casement station is 750 m northeast of the centre.

Tralee is a normal Irish market town and feels safe by day and in the pub streets at night. The real risks are weather and roads: wet, fast N-roads, no lighting on rural lanes, and tide or cliff edges at Fenit, Banna and Kerry Head.
