Trail is a working smelter town of about 7,700 people on the Columbia River in the West Kootenays, 25 km from Castlegar and 6 km from Rossland. The Teck lead-zinc plant sits on the cliff above downtown, and that contrast is the reason to look. Sights are thin, hiking and the river walk are the draw, and most travellers use it for a night or a half-day between Rossland and Nelson.
