Skip Tracy as a base unless you have a reason to be here: it is a 1-night stop between the Bay Area and the Central Valley, not a destination.
Tracy is a Central Valley railroad and farming town at the east end of the Altamont Pass, about an hour from the Bay Area when traffic cooperates and much longer when it does not. There is a small downtown, a historical museum, two golf courses and a mall. Almost everyone who sleeps here is passing through on I-580 or I-5, or visiting family. Treat it as a cheap bed and a fuel stop, not a sightseeing base.

Get around
You need a car. Blocks in the grid are close to a mile on each side, so walking between downtown and the hotels is impractical. Tracer buses run four fixed routes (A–D) all week plus weekday commuter routes (E–G), all starting at the Transit Station, 50 East 6th Street; routes A and B run reduced weekend service. - Wildfire smoke can arrive outside the usual Jul–Oct season — the 2024 Corral Fire burned in early June south of the city. Check air quality before outdoor plans.
- Country roads (Altamont Pass Road, Tesla Road, Patterson Pass Road) can be faster when the freeway jams, but they clog fast and are not built for heavy traffic.
- ACE commuter trains run weekdays only, four round-trips, and only in the commute direction: no weekend or midday service.
Tracy is a normal Central Valley commuter town; the practical risks are heat, freeway traffic and wildfire smoke, not street crime. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at highway motels.
