Toyama is the capital of Toyama prefecture on the Sea of Japan, 2 h 5 min from Tokyo on the fastest Hokuriku Shinkansen and 23 min from Kanazawa. The centre is compact enough to walk, and the city works as a staging point for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Kurobe gorge and the thatched villages of Gokayama. Most travellers give it one night, or two if they are heading into the mountains.

Get around
The centre is walkable: castle park and the glass museum are 10–15 min south of Toyama Station, and Fugan Canal Kansui Park is 10 min north. The Shiden tram (city tram) runs three routes from Dentetsu Toyama, linked to JR Toyama Station; the Portram light rail runs from the north side of the station to Iwase and the seaport. Buses fill the gaps. Chitetsu and Ainokaze local lines serve the region.

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity

Scams and watch-outs
- The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is seasonal and closes in winter; check opening dates and book transport before you commit.
- A Japan Rail Pass covers Toyama–Takaoka on the Ainokaze line only without a stopover; you pay if you get off in between.
- Snow and ice on pavements from December to February; the city gets heavy winter snowfall.
- Some bars and small restaurants post no prices; ask the total before you order.
Toyama is a low-crime city; the real risks are winter snow and ice, summer humidity, and bars with no posted prices. Japan's emergency numbers work everywhere.
