The Torres Strait Islands run from Cape York almost to Papua New Guinea: 14 inhabited islands, but only Thursday Island and Horn Island have regular flights, ferries and beds. Everything else is a charter, a water taxi or a freight run, and most communities ask you to arrange permission through the local council or land trust before you arrive. Treat it as a two- to four-night add-on to a Cape York or Cairns trip, not a beach holiday.
