Toronto in October: what to expect

October is Toronto's autumn transition month. The first half still feels like late summer on a good day — mild afternoons, cool mornings, leaves turning in the ravines and city parks. The second half is noticeably cooler and greyer, with the first frost possible in the suburbs and a real chance of a cold, windy day downtown.

Rain comes in showers and one- or two-day spells rather than all-day downpours, so a single rain shell is more useful than an umbrella you have to carry all day. Wind off Lake Ontario makes the waterfront and the ferry to the Toronto Islands feel several degrees colder than the streets inland.

Daylight drops fast: you lose roughly an hour of light across the month, and by the last week it is dark before 6pm. Plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep museums, galleries and indoor markets as your afternoon backup.

October sits in the middle of Toronto's demand curve. Summer school holidays are over, so midweek is quiet and hotel rates are lower than in July and August. The exception is the Thanksgiving long weekend, when Canadians travel to see family and the city fills with leaf-peepers heading north to Algonquin and Muskoka; book that weekend early.

After Thanksgiving, prices slide into the shoulder season. You will find the best value in the last ten days of the month, at the cost of colder weather and shorter days. Big concerts, hockey games and the occasional convention can spike rates for a single night, so check the Scotiabank Arena and Rogers Centre schedules before you lock in dates.

Attractions are manageable without timed tickets except on the Thanksgiving weekend and on rainy Saturdays, when the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario absorb everyone who abandoned an outdoor plan.

Toronto's October calendar is built around Thanksgiving, Halloween and the last big outdoor events before winter. Dates shift each year, so confirm before you build a trip around one.

Thanksgiving (second Monday, 12 October 2026) is a statutory holiday. Expect family gatherings, some smaller shops closed, and heavy traffic on the highways heading out of the city on Friday and back on Monday. Museums and major attractions generally stay open.

Halloween on 31 October is not a public holiday, but the city leans into it: costume shops, haunted houses and neighbourhood decorations, especially in the Annex and around Church-Wellesley. The Toronto After Dark film festival and various harvest and pumpkin events at farms outside the city usually run through the month (check dates).

Autumn colour peaks in Ontario parks north of the city in late September and early October, and inside Toronto a week or two later — the Don Valley, High Park and the Mount Pleasant Cemetery grounds are the local spots.

October suits a city-and-foliage trip rather than a beach or lake trip. The Toronto Islands are still worth a visit early in the month for skyline views and quiet paths, but the ferries thin out and the beaches are done for the year.

In the city, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the CN Tower work in any weather; the CN Tower's outdoor EdgeWalk usually runs into October and then closes for the season (check). The Distillery District, Kensington Market and St Lawrence Market are good half-day walks with indoor shelter when it rains.

For foliage, head to the Don Valley trails, High Park, the Scarborough Bluffs and the Toronto Botanical Garden. If you have a car or a day tour, the Muskoka and Algonquin areas north of the city are at their best in the first week or two of October — that is also when they are busiest.

Niagara Falls day trips still run all month, but the boats and some outdoor attractions wind down toward the end of October (check).

Pack for two seasons in one trip. Early October can still deliver a 20 °C afternoon; late October can deliver a 2 °C morning with wind chill off the lake. Layers you can add and remove beat one heavy coat.

A waterproof shell with a hood is the single most useful item — Toronto rain is often light but persistent, and wind makes umbrellas awkward downtown. Add a warm mid-layer (fleece or light down), a scarf and a hat for the last week, and comfortable shoes for long walking days on pavement and park trails.

Bring a small daypack for layers you shed in the afternoon, and a power bank if you plan to use your phone for transit tickets and maps all day.

September is warmer and greener, with the city still in summer mode and crowds back to normal after Labour Day. If you want outdoor dining and lake time, September beats October.

November is the trade-off: cheaper hotels and thinner crowds, but grey, damp weather, bare trees and the first snow flurries possible. December brings Christmas markets and holiday lights, along with the year's highest prices around the holidays.
