Short answer

Offline maps in Google Maps are a download, not a setting. You pick a rectangle on the map, tap Download, and the app stores the road network, place names and basic points of interest for that box on your phone. Once it is saved, the map draws without a data connection, your saved pins appear, and you can get driving and walking directions between two points inside the box.

That covers the main job: finding your hotel, walking to a station, showing a driver where you want to go. It does not cover everything. Transit directions, live traffic, current opening hours, ride-hailing and any place that was added after your download need a connection. Treat offline maps as your map and compass, not as your whole trip planner.

The practical routine is short. Before you leave home or on the first night in a hotel, open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, choose Offline maps, then Select your own map, drag the box over the city you are heading to, and tap Download. Do the same for the next city on your route. Keep the phone in offline mode or airplane mode when you are not using data, and the map still works.

Do

  • Download at home on fast Wi-Fi if you can; a country-sized area can take a while.
  • Download the city you land in first, then add the rest as you go.

Steps: download before you go

The exact menu wording shifts between app versions and between Android and iOS, but the path is stable: profile picture, Offline maps, Select your own map. Drag and pinch the rectangle until it covers the area you actually need, then tap Download. The app tells you the size before it starts, so you can decide whether to trim the box.

Download more than one area. A trip that moves between cities needs a box for each, and a long transfer by road or rail may pass through a gap between them. If you are driving a long route, either download a chain of overlapping boxes or take the larger region and accept the bigger file.

Check the download finished. Open Offline maps and look for the saved area with its size and an expiry date. If it is still spinning, leave the app open on Wi-Fi until it completes. A half-finished download is worse than none, because you will trust it.

Then test it. Turn on airplane mode, close the app, reopen it, and search for your hotel by name. If the pin appears and a walking route draws, you are set. If it does not, the box missed the area or the download failed, and you have time to fix it.

Do

  • Name your offline areas after the trip, not the city, if you download several.
  • Screenshot the hotel address in the local script as well; it works when nothing else does.

Watch out

  • Do not rely on a download that you have not opened in airplane mode at least once.

Costs and time

Offline maps are free; you pay in storage and in the time it takes to download. A single city box is usually a few hundred megabytes. A large region or a whole country can run to several gigabytes, which matters on a 64 GB phone that is already full of photos. Check free space before you start and delete old areas you no longer need.

Download time depends on the connection. On good hotel Wi-Fi a city takes a few minutes; a country-sized area can take much longer and may be better done at home. If you are on a metered mobile plan, do not start a large download on cellular data.

The other cost is data you avoid. Running the map offline means no roaming charges for map tiles, which is the point. You will still want some data for transit, messages and bookings, so a local eSIM or a small roaming bundle is worth having alongside the offline map, not instead of it.

Costs and time
Area typeTypical sizeTypical download time

Metro regionAround 1 GB10–30 minutes (check)
Whole countrySeveral GBAn hour or more (check)

Sizes and times are 2026 estimates and vary with map detail and connection.

Do

  • Delete offline areas after the trip to reclaim storage.
  • Keep one small area for your home city too; it is handy when your own network drops.

Watch out

  • A large download on a metered plan can cost more than a local SIM.

What works offline and what does not

Inside a downloaded area you get the base map, place names, your saved lists and pins, and directions for driving and walking between two points. Search works for places that were in the map data when you downloaded it. That is enough for the core travel jobs: getting from a station to a hotel, finding a pharmacy, showing a taxi driver a pin.

What fails is anything that needs a live answer. Transit directions and timetables need a connection. Live traffic and rerouting around jams need a connection. Opening hours, prices, reviews and photos are fetched fresh, so they may be missing or stale. Ride-hailing and food delivery apps are separate apps and need data regardless.

There is a middle ground worth knowing. If you have a local SIM with a small data allowance, keep data on but turn off background app refresh, and let Maps fetch transit only when you ask. Many travellers run the map offline for walking and switch data on for a single transit query at the station.

Feature behaviour can change with app updates (check).

Do

  • Save your key places to a list before you go; saved lists show offline.
  • For transit, screenshot the route and times while you still have Wi-Fi.

Watch out

  • Do not trust offline opening hours for a restaurant or a museum; call or check when you have signal.

Exceptions and common mistakes

The most common mistake is downloading too small a box. People draw a tight rectangle around the city centre, then land at an airport outside it, or take a day trip past the edge, and the map goes blank exactly when they need it. Draw generously, and add a second box for the airport and for any day trip.

The second mistake is trusting a download you never tested. A download that stalled at 40 percent looks saved in the list but has holes. Open it in airplane mode before you rely on it.

The third is forgetting that offline areas expire. Google refreshes them periodically, and an area you downloaded long ago and never opened can lapse. Before a trip, reopen the app on Wi-Fi and let it update the areas you plan to use. If you are heading somewhere for months, refresh before you leave reliable Wi-Fi.

Other gaps to plan around: offline maps do not cover transit, so a city with no walking option needs a second app or a paper plan. They do not help with ride-hailing. They do not translate. And on a phone with two SIMs, check which one is set for data before you assume you are offline; a background sync can quietly use roaming data.

Do

  • Add a box for the airport and for each day trip, not just the city.
  • Reopen the app on Wi-Fi the week before you fly so areas refresh.

Watch out

  • An expired or partial offline area can leave you without a map at the worst moment.

Backups that work when the map does not

Carry a second offline map app. OpenStreetMap-based apps and other map apps store their own offline data, and having two independent copies means a failed download or a wiped cache does not strand you. Download the same city in both before you go.

Carry the address in writing. A screenshot of the hotel name and address in the local script, plus a pin, solves the taxi and the front-desk conversation when your phone is dead or the driver does not read Latin script. Paper is fine; a photo in your camera roll is fine.

Carry power. Offline maps drain the battery faster than you expect because the GPS radio runs continuously. A power bank and a charging cable matter more than any app setting. If you are navigating on foot all day, keep the phone in airplane mode between checks and turn the screen brightness down.

Finally, tell someone your plan. If you are walking a long route or driving somewhere remote, a shared location or a message to a friend is the backup that works when the phone does not.

Do

  • Download the same city in two apps.
  • Keep a power bank charged and a cable in your day bag.

Watch out

  • GPS works without data, but it still needs battery; a flat phone has no map.

Questions people ask

Google Maps offline: how to use it abroad: what do I need to know?

Download the area before you travel, on Wi-Fi, using the Offline maps option in the app. Once saved, the base map, your saved places and driving and walking directions work without a connection. Transit, live traffic, current opening hours and ride-hailing do not. Test the download in airplane mode before you rely on it.

What are the most common mistakes?

Drawing too small an area and missing the airport or a day trip; never testing the download in airplane mode; letting an old offline area expire without refreshing it; and expecting transit directions to work offline. A second map app and a screenshot of the address cover most of these.

What should I do before I travel?

Check free storage, download each city and the airport on Wi-Fi, save your key places to a list, screenshot addresses in the local script, download a second offline map app, and pack a charged power bank. Reopen the app on Wi-Fi the week before you fly so the areas refresh.

How much space do offline maps take?

A city is usually a few hundred megabytes and a whole country can be several gigabytes. Check your free storage before starting a large download, and delete areas you no longer need.

Do offline maps expire?

Google refreshes offline areas automatically, and an area you downloaded long ago and never opened can lapse. Reopen the app on Wi-Fi before a trip to let it update the areas you plan to use.

Can I get transit directions offline?

No. Transit directions and timetables need a connection. Screenshot the route and times while you have Wi-Fi, or turn data on briefly at the station for a single query.
