Getting around in Stockholm
Metro, buses, trams and the Djurgården ferry are mostly step-free; Gamla Stan is cobbled with steep lanes and many old buildings have no lift.
- Metro:
- Most stations have lifts; at a few stations the lift is far from the platform (check SL's step-free map).
- Buses and trams:
- Low floors and ramps; the driver deploys the ramp on request.
- Museums:
- Vasa, ABBA and Skansen have step-free routes; Skansen's hill is steep in places.
Medicines and health on the ground
- Insurance or EHIC/GHIC · before flying: Medical cover including winter activities if you go to Lapland.
- Water:
- Tap water is safe and good; refill bottles anywhere.
- Sun:
- UV is strong in June and July; use sunscreen at the beach.
- Ticks:
- Tick bites are possible in grass and forest in summer; check skin after walks in the archipelago.
- Pharmacies:
- Apotek staff give first advice; medicines for common complaints are sold over the counter.
- Doctors:
- Use 1177 for advice or call a hospital; visitors pay for care (EU visitors: bring your EHIC or GHIC).
More: how much medicine to pack, medicine times across time zones.
Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
