Getting around in Monrovia
Monrovia is very hard on wheels. Pavements are broken or missing, power is unreliable and few buildings have lifts. Plan hotel-based days with a private car.
- Pavements:
- Broken, blocked or missing; expect to walk in the road.
- Transport:
- A private car is the only realistic option.
- Hotels:
- Mamba Point hotels are the most likely to have lifts and ramps; confirm.
- Toilets:
- Accessible toilets are rare outside hotels.
- Power cuts:
- Lifts stop during outages; ask about generators.
Medicines and health on the ground
- Travel insurance with evacuation · before flying: Medical care is very limited.
- Malaria:
- Malaria is present all year: ask a travel clinic about prevention and use repellent and a net.
- Yellow fever:
- A certificate is usually required for entry (check); vaccination is recommended.
- Water and food:
- Bottled or filtered water only; eat freshly cooked food.
- Ebola and other outbreaks:
- Check your government's health advice before you fly.
- Heat:
- Heat and humidity are constant: drink water, rest at midday.
- Medical care:
- Care is limited; take out travel insurance with medical evacuation.
More: how much medicine to pack, medicine times across time zones.
Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
