Getting around in Marigot
The Marigot waterfront and marina are flat and paved, which suits wheels; the fort, side streets and beaches are harder. Taxis are the practical option; ask for a van.
- Pavements:
- Level on the waterfront and boulevard; narrow and broken on side streets.
- Transport:
- Taxis and hire cars; local buses are not accessible.
- Toilets:
- Accessible toilets are in hotels and some shops.
- Beaches:
- Sand and steps; few boardwalks (check).
- Heat:
- Shade breaks every 60 minutes.
Medicines and health on the ground
The Saint-Martin guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.
- Sun:
- UV is strong all year: use reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and shade.
- Mosquitoes:
- Dengue, chikungunya and Zika occur; use repellent and cover up at dusk.
- Water and food:
- Tap water is treated; many prefer bottled water; food standards are high.
- Sargassum:
- Seaweed can wash up on windward beaches in some years (check before you go).
- Sea life:
- Watch for sea urchins and jellyfish; wear reef shoes.
- Pharmacies:
- Pharmacies sell common medicines; bring your own prescription supply.

Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
