Places, easiest access first

Getting around in Malé

Malé is difficult on wheels: pavements are narrow, kerbs are high and scooters take much of the road. A few museums and hotels have ramps. Book a hotel with a lift and use taxis door to door; Hulhumalé has wider streets.

Pavements:
Narrow, with high kerbs; many streets have none.
Getting around:
Taxis are the practical step-free option; ask the driver to help with a folded chair.
Hotels:
Larger Malé hotels have lifts; small guesthouses often do not.
Toilets:
Accessible toilets are rare; the museum and larger hotels may have one (check).
Boats:
Ferries and speedboats have steps or gaps; ask the operator for help before you book.

Medicines and health on the ground

The Maldives guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.

Sun and heat:
Strong sun and humidity all year; use sun protection, a hat and drink often.
Dengue:
Mosquito-borne and present; use repellent and cover up at dawn and dusk.
Food and water:
Bottled water only; choose busy places with hot food.
Vaccination and clinics:
Routine vaccines as advised; check with a travel clinic before you fly.
Medicine:
Bring what you need, including motion-sickness tablets for boats; pharmacies in Malé are good but not everywhere else.

Ask your insurer

Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.

  • What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
  • Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
  • Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
  • Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?

Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
