Places, easiest access first

Getting around in Helsinki

Helsinki works well for most mobility needs: step-free trams, metro and ferries, level pavements. Cobbles around Senate Square and Suomenlinna and winter ice are the exceptions.

Trams and metro:
Low-floor trams and step-free metro with lifts; ask for the ramp on ferries.
Pavements:
Good, with kerb cuts; heated pavements in some central streets in winter, ice elsewhere.
Toilets:
Accessible toilets in Oodi, the station and museums; some public toilets need a coin or card.

Medicines and health on the ground

The Finland guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.

Cold:
Layer in winter, protect hands, ears and feet; frostbite is possible below about −15 °C.
Ticks:
Ticks in woods and archipelago grass in summer; wear long trousers and check skin after a walk.
Sun:
Long summer days: sun protection still matters even when it is cool.
Tap water:
Drink from the tap; it is very good.
Insurance:
Travel insurance with medical cover; non-EU visitors pay full private rates.

More: how much medicine to pack, medicine times across time zones.

Ask your insurer

Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.

  • What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
  • Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
  • Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
  • Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?

Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
