Getting around in Algiers
Algiers is hard going on wheels outside the flatter centre. The Casbah is stairs throughout; El Hamma and the centre are gentler but pavements are uneven in places. Plan car rides between clusters and a hotel with a lift.
- Casbah:
- Steep stone stairs and narrow lanes throughout; not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.
- Centre and El Hamma:
- Flatter, but pavements are uneven in places; step-free access exists mainly in newer buildings.
- Getting around:
- A car is the step-free option between clusters; agree the fare or confirm the meter first.
Medicines and health on the ground
The Algeria guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.
- Heat:
- Jun–Sep: shade and water every hour on the Casbah stairs; avoid the midday sun.
- Food and water:
- Bottled or filtered water only; eat at busy stalls with fast turnover.
- Sun:
- The Casbah's stone lanes and El Hamma's open plazas offer little shade at midday; a hat and sunscreen help outside the cooler months.

Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
