  • Tomb of Đồng Khánh

Twenty-five minutes on foot from Tự Đức's gate is the small tomb of his adopted son: a temple with lacquer, French tiles and glass paintings, and usually nobody else. Add it when you are at Tự Đức anyway.

usually quiet · about 40 min · on_site ticket · Tomb of Tự Đức

  • An Định Palace

Forty minutes in Khải Định's European-style palace on the An Cựu canal, south bank: painted wall panels, gilded ceilings and the rooms where the last royal family lived after 1945. Best as a rain or heat stop, not a morning slot.

moderate · about 45 min · on_site ticket · South bank (Lê Lợi and Phạm Ngũ Lão)

  • Huế Museum of Royal Antiquities

Thirty minutes inside the 1845 Long An palace, a wooden hall with robes, porcelain and court objects; the heat or rain break after the Imperial City.

moderate · about 40 min · on_site ticket · Imperial City (Đại Nội)

  • Trường Tiền Bridge

Walk across at dusk (10 minutes) when the colour-changing lights come on over the Perfume River; the evening walking-street on the south bank follows.

moderate · about 20 min · free · Đông Ba Market and Trường Tiền Bridge
