Tokyo metro

The densest network on earth: two subway operators plus JR and private railways, all on one IC card. Trains are punctual to the minute; the only real problem is the last train.

Reading the local time…

Working out tonight's last trains…

Plan for another night

After midnight counts as the night before: Saturday 01:30 is still Friday night's service.

Typical last trains from central stations; the ends of a line stop earlier, and holidays use their own timetable. Check the operator's app on the night.

Almost every Tokyo Metro and Toei station has at least one step-free route with lifts (check the exit); JR big stations are good, small ones vary.

Etiquette and rulescheck

  • No phone calls; phones on silent.
  • Women-only cars on many lines in the morning rush (signs on the platform).
  • Eating on commuter trains is frowned on; long-distance trains are fine.
  • Queue in the marked lines; let people off first; backpacks on the front or on the rack.

After the last traincheck

  • Taxis (GO and Uber apps, or hail): expect a 20% late-night surcharge from 22:00.
  • Some late-night buses on main routes (check); otherwise karaoke, manga cafés or a capsule hotel until the first train around 05:00.
