New York metro

One of the few big systems running 24/7. Express and local tracks share lines, so read the train's letter or number, not just the colour; late at night some services change or stop.

Plan for another night

After midnight counts as the night before: Saturday 01:30 is still Friday night's service.

Typical last trains from central stations; the ends of a line stop earlier, and holidays use their own timetable. Check the operator's app on the night.

Step-free accesscheck

Only about a third of stations are accessible with lifts; check the MTA's elevator status before relying on one.

Etiquette and rulescheck

  • Take backpacks off in crowded cars; don't lean on the pole.
  • Let people off first; move to the middle of the car.
  • An empty car in a crowded train is empty for a reason.

After the last traincheck

  • No 'after'—the subway runs all night; for speed use yellow cabs, green boro taxis, Uber or Lyft.
