Tooleybuc
Stop for one night on the Murray, not a destination: the river, one pub meal and a walk. Two hours covers the town; skip it if you are not driving.
Tooleybuc is a small border town of about 200 people on the New South Wales side of the Murray River, in the western Riverina. There is no station and no bus worth planning around, so you arrive by car on the Yanga Way from New South Wales or the B400/B12 from Victoria. The river is the reason to come; everything else is a bed, a meal and a launch point for the wider Riverina.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel station or supermarket in town: fill up and shop in Balranald, Swan Hill or Kerang before you arrive.
- Mobile coverage can drop on the Yanga Way and back roads; download maps before you leave.
- Kangaroos and emus on the road at dawn and dusk: slow down and scan the verges.
- Summer heat is the real hazard: carry water and avoid long walks after 11:00 in January and February.
- The Murray is an inland river with currents and snags: swim near the bank, not alone.
A quiet river town with little street crime. The real risks are the drive in (kangaroos, long empty roads), summer heat and the river itself: swim near the bank and never alone.
