Tongeren
Give Tongeren one night, or a Sunday: the Roman walls and basilica take half a day, the Sunday antique market takes the rest.
Tongeren calls itself the oldest town in Belgium, and the Roman layer is real: a 2nd-century wall still runs for over 1,500 m and the basilica sits on a 4th-century church site. The town is small and flat, so the sights fit in half a day on foot. Most travellers come for the Sunday antique and flea market, which is the one day the town is busy. Stay one night if you want the market at opening, otherwise it works as a day trip from Hasselt, Maastricht or Liège.

Get around
The old town is flat and small; the basilica, Grote Markt, béguinage and Roman wall are all within a few hundred metres of each other, so walk. Four city bus lines run Monday to Saturday, one of them out to the village of Herstappe; on Sunday there is no regular service and you must call ahead to order a bus. Bikes can be rented at the station (Blue-bike, sign up online first). Parking in the old town is paid, with three underground car parks.

Tongeren is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are wet cobbles, bicycles in the narrow lanes, and pickpockets in the Sunday market crowd: keep bags zipped and front-facing.
