Tobermory, Ontario
Tobermory
Go for 2 nights between late May and mid-October. Book the Grotto and the Chi-Cheemaun ferry before you leave home; outside that window the town mostly shuts.
Tobermory is a harbour village of under 1,000 people at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. Two national parks sit on its doorstep: Bruce Peninsula National Park on land and Fathom Five National Marine Park offshore, with 24 shipwrecks and Flowerpot Island. About 750,000 people visit the parks each year, so in July and August you book everything ahead or you don't get in. Two nights covers the Grotto, a boat trip and the harbour; three if you dive or hike the Bruce Trail's northern end.

Get around
You need your own vehicle. The nearest taxi is about 1 h 20 min away in Owen Sound, and there is no local bus. Parkbus runs a summer service from Toronto and stops at 22 Hay Bay Rd in town and at Cyprus Lake Campground. Inside the parks, walk or cycle; parking at the Grotto and Halfway Log Dump fills early and needs a permit in season.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Most shops, restaurants and motels open May to mid-October only; the rest of the year the town is largely closed.
- Bruce Peninsula National Park and the Grotto need a booked parking permit in high season; without one you are turned away at the gate.
- All scuba divers must register at the Fathom Five park visitor centre before diving.
- Cell coverage and fuel are thin on the peninsula; fill up in Wiarton or Ferndale.
- Swimming is cold even in August, and the escarpment edges near the Grotto are slippery and unguarded.
Very safe for a small resort town; the real risks are cold water, slippery escarpment rock, deer and cyclists on Highway 6, and no taxi or hospital nearby — the nearest emergency department is in Lion's Head or Owen Sound.
