Tlacotalpan
Go for one night, not as a base: the UNESCO centre is a 2–3 hour walk, and Veracruz is 2.5 h away by second-class bus.
Tlacotalpan is a small colonial river town on the Papaloapan, listed by UNESCO for its grid of low, coloured houses and arcaded plaza. There is no beach and no big museum circuit: you come for the square, the river, the February Candelaria festival and slow food. One night covers it; two if you want a boat ride and a bike loop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- TRV is a second-class regional line: pay cash, buy at the counter, expect a basic bus.
- Late-summer storms can flood low riverside streets; check conditions in Sep–Oct.
- Winter river fog can slow the road in from Veracruz.
- Museum and church hours are limited and change: confirm locally before you walk over.
Tlacotalpan is a quiet small town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are heat, uneven pavements, unlit streets after dark and the September–October flood season.
