How to get to Timor-Leste: airports, flights and border crossings

Timor-Leste has one international gateway and two land crossings. Almost every traveller arrives at DIL, usually after a night in Bali or Darwin. Fares swing widely with season and how far ahead you book, so treat the figures below as 2026 estimates and check live prices.

Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport (DIL) sits about 10 minutes west of central Dili. It handles the country's scheduled international traffic; domestic flights to Suai, Baucau and Oecusse are infrequent and mainly serve residents and officials. If you are flying in, you are almost certainly flying into DIL.

The practical hubs are Bali (Denpasar), Darwin and Singapore. Darwin is the shortest hop and the most reliable for Australians; Bali has the most frequent service and is the easiest place to connect from wider Asia; Singapore suits travellers coming from Europe or North America who want one long leg before the final short flight. Schedules are thin — often a handful of flights a week on each route — so build your trip around the flight days rather than the other way round.

On arrival, immigration and customs are small and usually quick. Have your onward or return ticket, accommodation address and enough US dollars for any visa fee ready. The airport has limited food and no useful late-night options, so eat before you land if you arrive after dark.

There are no nonstop flights from the Americas or Europe. Every route runs through Asia or Australia, and the total journey time is dominated by connections, not flying time. From the US west coast, plan on 24–32 hours door to door; from the east coast, add a few hours. From the UK and Europe, 20–30 hours is normal. Canadians usually route through Vancouver or Toronto to Asia, then on to Bali or Singapore.

Australians have the easiest run: Darwin to Dili is a short nonstop hop, and Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne connect through Darwin or Bali. New Zealanders connect through Australia or Asia, typically 12–20 hours total.

Because the final leg into DIL is short and infrequent, the connection in Bali, Darwin or Singapore is where trips go wrong. Leave at least three hours between flights, and longer if you are changing airlines or terminals.

Timor-Leste shares its only land border with Indonesian West Timor. Two crossings matter to travellers: Mota'ain, on the coast near Batugade in the west, and Salele, in the south near Suai. Both are open to foreign travellers with the right visa, though hours and staffing can vary — check before you travel.

The usual overland route is from Kupang, the capital of Indonesian West Timor, by bus or shared car to the border at Mota'ain, then onward transport to Dili. The whole run takes most of a day and the road on the Timor-Leste side is rough in places. Bring your passport, your Indonesian exit stamp and cash for any fees. Do not count on ATMs or card payment at the border.

If you are coming from the south, Salele links Suai with Indonesian West Timor. It is quieter and less used by tourists, and transport on both sides is limited — arrange it in advance or expect a long wait.

There is no scheduled passenger ferry to Timor-Leste. Cruise ships occasionally call at Dili, and private yachts and expedition vessels arrive at Dili and Atauro, but these are not a practical way for independent travellers to reach the country. If you arrive by private vessel, clear immigration and customs at Dili port and expect paperwork and fees.

For everyone else, treat Timor-Leste as a fly-in destination, or a fly-in with an overland exit through Indonesia if you want to see West Timor.

Bring US dollars in cash. Timor-Leste uses the US dollar, with local centavo coins for change, and card acceptance is limited outside Dili's larger hotels and restaurants. Airport taxis, visa fees and small guesthouses may all want cash.

Check your visa situation before you fly. Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival at DIL or at the land crossings, but the rules depend on your passport and the purpose of your visit. Confirm with an official source, and carry a printed copy of your booking and travel insurance details.

Buy travel insurance that covers medical evacuation. Dili has hospitals and clinics, but serious cases are often evacuated to Darwin or Singapore, and that is expensive without cover. Also sort out a local SIM or eSIM on arrival — coverage outside Dili is patchy, so download offline maps before you travel.
