Tilba
Central Tilba
Give Tilba half a day: walk Bate Street, the dairy and the teapot cafe, then sleep in Narooma or Bermagui — parking fills by lunch.
Tilba is two villages on the Princes Highway in the Eurobodalla, about 10 km south of Narooma: Central Tilba on its hill, and Tilba Tilba 2 km away by the river. Under 400 people live here, and the whole village is a heritage-listed streetscape of timber shops and cottages. You come for a slow morning of cheese, pies and short walks, not for a resort stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking is small and fills around lunchtime; arrive before 11:00 or park on the village edge and walk in.
- Most shops and cafés close by mid-afternoon and several shut one or two weekdays: check opening hours before you drive out.
- Phone signal is patchy in the valley; download maps and payment apps before you arrive.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the Princes Highway at dawn and dusk.
Very safe. The real risks are the highway at dawn and dusk (wildlife), unpatrolled surf beaches, and bushfire danger on hot, windy summer days: check the fire danger rating before you drive.
