Tianjin is a 14-million-person port municipality 33 minutes from Beijing by bullet train, and China's fourth municipality. The draw is the concession-era architecture along the Hai River, the Italian quarter, the Binhai library and coast, and a food scene built on seafood and snacks. Two nights covers the centre; add a third for Binhai or Jizhou.

Scams and watch-outs
- Taxis near Tianjin Railway Station and tourist stops may refuse the meter or tout day tours; walk a block and use the official rank.
- Tianjin South Railway Station is far from the centre and its taxi rank is mostly unlicensed; use Metro Line 3.
- Roads are wide and crossings are often bridges, not tunnels: cross at lights and take care.
- Summer is humid and winter nights drop below −10°C; pack for the season, not for Beijing's averages.
As safe as any Chinese big city for the usual basics. The real risks are unmetered taxis, touted day tours at the station, and careless road crossings on wide new roads.
