Thuringia is a forested state of small cities strung along one east–west rail line: Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, Gera, Gotha, Eisenach. Trains between them run in 15–45 minutes, so one base covers most of it. Sleep in Erfurt for the hub and the fastest airport and ICE links, in Weimar for Goethe, Schiller and the Bauhaus, or in Eisenach for Wartburg and the western forest. The south around Sonneberg and Suhl is car country and looks toward Nuremberg, not Erfurt.
