Three Rivers
Stay 1–2 nights in Three Rivers only if you want the Sequoia south entrance at dawn; otherwise sleep in Visalia and drive in.
Three Rivers is a small Sierra foothill town on SR-198, about 56 km east of the SR-99 corridor and the closest lodging to Sequoia National Park's Ash Mountain (south) entrance. There is almost no sightseeing in town itself: people come to sleep near the gate, eat, and drive up into the park. Book ahead for summer and holiday weekends, when rooms near the entrance fill.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer daytime heat in the foothills; carry water.
- SR-198 is a two-lane mountain road: expect slow curves and chain controls in winter storms.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the canyon and inside the park.
- Park entry needs a pass or reservation: check current Sequoia and Kings Canyon rules before you drive up.
Low-crime small town; the real risks are heat, mountain-road driving and wildlife if you hike. Tell someone your route before going into the park.
