Thorold
Skip Thorold as a base: sleep in St. Catharines or Niagara Falls and come for half a day at Lock 7 and the canal trail.
Thorold is a small canal city of about 24,000 people on the Niagara Peninsula, wedged between St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. Its one real draw is the Welland Canal: you can stand at Lock 7 and watch lake freighters climb or drop roughly 13 m between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Everything else — a town museum, a mill ruin, a pumpkin farm, a drive-in — is thin, spread out and car-dependent. Treat it as a two-to-four-hour stop inside a Niagara trip, not a destination with its own nights.

Get around
You need a car for almost everything except downtown Thorold. Niagara Region Transit routes 50 and 55 stop at the Thorold Towpath Terminal, and route 320/420 links Brock University and the Pen Centre with downtown St. Catharines; cash fares are low but schedules thin out outside term time. Thorold South is poorly served by bus. Highways 406 and 20 run through the city.

Thorold is a low-crime small city and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are practical: unlit canal-trail sections after dark, fast traffic on Highway 406 and 20, and ice on trails and lock walls from December to March.
